The Rain Drop Walk

January has finally ended and it felt like the longest 2 years of my life. Why does January always feel likes it much longer than it actually is? A question for another day, perhaps.

We had several weeks of delightful weather which included temps in the 40s, blue skies and sunshine.

It was all wrong.

January is supposed to be rainy, cloudy and gray leading us into February snow.

One of two things will happen:

  1. February will be exceptionally mild and we will head straight into spring and then a very hot, dry summer. (bad for fire season)

  2. February will be colder than normal and will release upon us snow and ice that will be unmanageable. (this has happened only once since we’ve moved here)

So, while I was mildly concerned about the weather, our political climate, our constitutional crisis and all of that (waves arm in a sweeping motion), the weather changed.

I woke up one morning and it was raining. I guess I’m turning into a true PNW’er because I got out of bed, looked out the window, heaved a sigh of relief and said “finally!”

I wanted to go out and celebrate the rain returning, so I put my macro lens on my camera and went out for a “Rain Drop Walk”.

I spent over an hour with my camera, out in the rain, creating macro images of rain drops.

Photographing these delicate rain drops reminded me of a song by Richie Sambora called “The Answer”. It’s an older song, but it’s on my Spotify playlist and whenever it comes up, I stop and listen to it. Like, really listen to it. They lyrics include a line that says

“There’s a world in every drop of rain”

and that’s what I thought of as I created these images. If you look closely at some of these images, you can see “the world” in the drop of rain. It’s kind of magical, don’t you think? A world, inverted, that reflects back to the onlooker.

“what do you see?” the rain drop asks.

I have not released all of the images in this series, because one of them is going to be created into a post card for my post card club. I guess if you want to see more, you’ll have to join the club.
